John Lennon (he was so full of shit sometimes... and I say this as one who was a huge John Lennon fan and wouldn't even buy Paul McCartney albums after the Beatles broke up)
It wouldn't be cheating, Sandra, but I feel the same as Miche. It's more of a personal challenge. Here's another Les Miserables reference (different song):
I dreamed that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving
That's exactly how I look at it, Sally! It's too easy to use the hymns and other stuff. It's more of a challenge to think of secular music. Here's my next Les Mis contribution from the song Bring Him Home:
God on high, Hear my prayer. In my need, You have always been there.
I'm pretty sure neither the old nor new lyrics game will have "Jesus," and I'm almost exclusively using words and categories from the real cards. Play whatever you like!
But you can't have this one anymore:
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come
(Now I'm doing the happy Baptist dance. OOOH no; wait. Step away from the dancing...) It's in everybody else's hymnal too, pretty much, so others can dance, although as a dance tune I'd have to give it a 65.
I'll try using some of your expanded "god" words as I run through my brain's churchsong file...
Oh! Here's one:
The Godhead, three in one Father, Spirit, Son The Lion and the Lamb Lion and the Lamb How great is our God Sing with me How great is our God And all will see How great, how great is our God
Hah! You're right, Sally! I've been thinking country songs, but either I don't know enough words or they refer to God without saying God.
Sandra, here's one for your happy Baptist dance (well, slow dance):
Great is thy faithfulness, Oh, God, my father, There is no shadow of turning in thee.
I grew up Baptist (although I identify myself more as non-denominational) and I love to dance. Maybe I'll start referring to myself as undenominational. :-)
Sandra, I could not remember those lyrics from Jesus Christ Superstar to save my life, and I knew God was in that song somewhere!
Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers. Just remember when you're talking to the man upstairs (or is it up there) That just because he doesn't answer Doesn't mean he don't care. Some of God's greatest gifts Are unanswered prayers.
Garth Brooks Finally! I knew there had to be a country song that I remembered enough words from.
So, drink drink, to Charley Forte's memory. Marvelous doings and marvelous sights. Drink drink, we may as well join them, the Gods are not Crazy, they're higher than kites.
God is God and I am not, I can only see a part Of the picture He's painting. God is God and I am man, So I'll never understand it all For only God is God

God bless America - land that I love!
Stand beside her, and guide her
(For some reason it feels like cheating to use all the hymns and contemporary Christian music I know on this one.)

Miche, it's not cheating to use hymns. Go ahead!
Now what might seem light cheating would be using parodies, such as
What if God smoked cannibis
Hit the bong like some of us?
:-)

A real challenge for Miche and me would be if we couldn't use church songs, hymns, or BROADWAY MUSICALS. :D
