Cigarette

The word, or a brand of cigarettes, or something clearly "cigarette."

Winston tastes good like a cigarette should
Winston tastes good like a (clap clap) cigarette should.

Commercial jingle from the 1960's and maybe earlier too, used as a bad example in grammar classes, and it might be "snap snap" rather than claps, but it's a two-beat percussive bit there.

Here we are, out of cigarettes
Holding hands and yawning
Look how late it gets
Two sleepy people
By dawn's early light
Much too much in love to say goodnight

(Sandra didn't credit a song)

Sandra Dodd said...

I didn't credit two songs. I can sing them but I don't know who sang them. They're both from the 1950's, I think; country-swing kind of things.

Don't bogart that joint my friend
Hand it over to me...

And that one I don't know either, and it's from the late 60's. Possibly Country Joe and the Fish

Holly said...

.... are you sure that's a cigarette joint? Oh well, my turn.

This is more about the smoking than the cigarette, but I like the lyric, so....

Come what may
We are entitled by our birth
To the treasures of the earth
No one must be denied these
No one must be denied
Easy dreams at the end of a chain-smokin' day
Easy dreams at the end of the day.

Keith helped me. I was saying "West Side Story, Officer Krupke or somewhere, the Jets. There's a cigarette!" I was going crazy. He should've started singing "keep cool, boy..." (Snap, snap...)

I bet there's a Beatles song with a cigarette, but I thought so fast and hard my brain had a traffic jam.

Okay, is using a different language cheating? (and the song doesn't have the word "cigarettes", but a brand : "Cravon A")
Singer is Sabine Paturel, the name of the song is "les bêtises"

Nah, it's fine. Thanks for playing.

I have little whiffs and hints of parts of cigarette songs in my head and it's bugging me. I hope I wake up thinking of some.

Sandra, from "King of the Road," that lyric is describing the hotel:

No phone, no POOL, no pets;
I ain't got no cigarettes.
Two hours of pushing broom
Buys an 8 by 10 four bit room.
I'm a man of means by no means,
King of the Road!

(I listened to that a lot on my parents' stereo as a kid. There is a companion piece, "Queen of the House.")

Good, Nan, thanks! I never listened to it closely and it never made sense before and now it does!

"Ich liebe Dich" by "Clowns und Helden"

Vorher - vorher rauch ich noch 'ne Zigarette
Meist rauch ich dann zwei oder drei Schachteln und halt meine Klappe

...

Gib mir noch 'ne Zigarette, ich bin völlig aufgedreht
Oh bitte lach jetzt nicht - ich liebe dich

It's the greatest song about confessing your love that I know. Here is my humble translation:

I'll - smoke another cigarette
Usually I end up smoking two or three boxes and keep my mouth shut

...

Give me another cigarette, please, I have to calm down
Please don't laugh, but - I'm loving you
