I know now that you're not a plaything
Not a toy or a puppet on a string

But in real life I'm stuck with
This same old formula,
Me and my monophonic symphony,
Six-string orchestra.

--Harry Chapin, "Six String Orchestra"

Some kind of alien
Waits for the opening
Simply pulls a string
Love comes walkin' in

I got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got that string around my finger
What a world!
What a life!
I'm in love!

(Harold Arlen/Ted Koehler, notably sung by Frank Sinatra)

You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
You've got to be your own man not a puppet on a string

And this G-string, I'll have you know
Has never been to a burlesque show.

I'm gonna tie myself with red string
I'm gonna use blue ribbon, too
Climb right up into your mailbox
I'm gonna mail myself to you

I'm pretty sure that Woody Guthrie line is "up in paper...red ribbon too," but they did tie packages with string in those days so visually... you can have it.

I thought of the string! It's at the end, I think:

When you find me in your mailbox
Cut the string and let me out
(But if we were playing I'd let the first player "have the point")

I've got no strings
To hold me down
To make me fret
Or make me frown
How I love my liberty
There are no strings on me

I got my first real six string
Bought it at the five and dime
Played until my fingers bled
It was the summer of sixty nine

The whole song as I know it:

I'm gonna wrap myself in paper
I'm gonna daub myself with glue
Stick some stamps on top of my head
I'm gonna mail myself to you

I'm gonna tie myself with red string
I'm gonna use blue ribbon, too
Climb right up into your mailbox
I'm gonna mail myself to you

When you see me in your mailbox
Cut the strings and let me out
Wipe the glue right offa my fingers
Stick some bubblegum in my mouth

I'm gonna blow a great, big bubble
I'm gonna blow it 'til it pops
Then we'll stick ourselves together
Cause I think that you're the tops

That's what I learned as a kid, and it could have been an embellished version. :D

And, so this post isn't wasted:

And you don't really mind
And you're just wasting time
You don't feel anything
You're a boy on a string

Little Jackie Paper
loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and sealing wax
and other fancy stuff.
