She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light from the stars

On the hillside of velvet, the children who play...

(and later in the same (long) song)

...with a tunic of velvet and a gown of white lace

"Legend of the Girl-Child Linda," by Donovan

(Holly was listening to Donovan anyway, and I told her I thought that song had the word "velvet," so we listened. I knew all the words to that song when I was fifteen and would sing and play it at school, for people who would actually sit and listen.)

Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
(blah blah blah) best in the land (?)
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

(Irish thing I obviously don't remember, but I know the tune.)

Orpheus in red velvet.
Sing your sweet refrain.
My tears are falling like the rain.

Grasshoppers creaking in the velvet jungle night
Microscopic circles in the fluid of my sight

You can just sit there thinking
On your velvet throne
About all the rainbows you can
Have for your own.
