Birthday
Today would be my dad's birthday. His name was Kirby Lynn Adams. I always remember my dad's birthday because it's one week before my own. He would be 81, but he died when he was 53. I'm 53. His mom lived to be 81 or 83 or so.
How about songs about birthdays, or with the word birthday, or about parties!

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday!
This is from Stevie Wonder's song, "Happy Birthday," which he wrote to commemorate and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.
(I was only coming up with more pensive, dark birthday songs, but I wanted to put a song here that was more joyful.)
I don't mind pensive and dark, Marji! Bring it on!I
You're older than you've ever been
And now you're even older,
And now you're older still.
("Older," They Might Be Giants)
That will be the anthem for my birthday party next week! We're playing Encore next Tuesday night 7/24, if anyone here is close enough to come over. Sierra, Brett, Sadie...)
You say it's your birthday
It's my birthday too, yeah

We're gonna have a good time.

This is for my sister, whose birthday is today, too, and your dad, Sandra:
Born with the moon in Cancer
Chose her a name she will answer to
~and~
Just a little green
Like the nights when the northern lights perform
There'll be icicles and birthday clothes
And sometimes there'll be sorrow
From "Little Green," by Joni Mitchell (I'll bring on the more dark and pensive stuff later on after more folks have had a chance to post)

When he turned 34, but who's counting, he couldn't find anyone who wanted to party
--time goes on--
[I think describing a photograph]
It was the kind of party that you hope never ends, the lucky party boy surrounded by his friends, they were all in pointed hats caught in a rebel birthday shout, and he was at the candles with his mom there to help him out
"Party generation"
Dar Williams
He was born a pauper to a pawn
On a Christmas Day
When the New York Times
Said God was dead
("Levon," words by Bernie Taupin, music by Elton John)
(I had a typo before)
When Holly told me she was going to quote Laurie>, I reminded her she hadn't used it on family members or articles of clothing. After she quoted it here I objected, and said I thought the dad told him it was her birthday, with "My daughter left this world on her birthday..."
Holly said "Do you want to hear it?" I said "Not if you're right," meaning I would take her word for it (but she took it differently), but we did listen and it mentions birthday TWICE, and sweater, and daughter, AND night (times of day) and knock--FIVE categories from this game in one song. I guess it's not the only one, either.
In the SCA, people used to sing this on birthdays, to the tune of the Volga Boat Song:
Happy birthday (HUH/grunt)
Happy birthday (HUH)
Gloom and doom and dark despair
People dying everywhere
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
May the candles on your cake
Burn like cities in your wake
Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday
